Topic: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

Hello everyone.

I love my Konnekt 8 to bits

BUT

I am having problems with it.

1) Weird balance issues. When I turn down the out put level, it leaks 2 db out of one channel. I have to turn the source vol down to mute it.

2) Bursts of digital distortion which come out of no where.

I have the latest firmware and a reasonably hi spec setup here :

Excellent quarter inch to canon cabling (expensive, virtually brand new, balanced cables) straight out of the soundcard into my sub which feeds satellites
Dynaudio BM5 satellites and BM9S sub

I feel my setup is pretty clean and good.

Any suggestions as to what the issue might be here?

I gave the sound card back to the person I bought it off and they tested it on another machine and had no problems. So it must be something on my end? But what? I reinstalled my studio PC last week with fresh XP and its still doing it.

Suggestions anyone??

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

I have some truble with my Connect 8. I have last firmware and drivers too.

Help please.

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

After update of firmware, did you reset device to default...?

If not, try unplug everything ex. firewire, upload firmware again and then reset to default.
Restart every thing!, then replug... !!!!!

Been through some K8´s resently...chasing the static bug...never found it!

Soundcard = K8 ...right?
1-2 Jack to XLR to the sub?

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

This is hardware failure issue for me inside Connect 8 ((( Some hardware piece is malfunction after 4 month work... (

Now my Connect was repaired (2 week!) in Service Center...

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

Ernest - I had a similar situation.. My K8 hardware worked fine (although we all know about the drivers..) for about 4 months as wel, then the left channel became intermittent and, eventually went away completely.

I am just now trying the new unit TC Service center has sent me back (mine took more like 6 weeks..) It seems to work so far, electromechanically-speaking. Of course, the software is another deal altogether, as usual.

GET THIS - the official posted 2.0 tcnear app will load ok w/o the K8 connected, and tell me 'no device connected'. But if I turn the K8 on and the link is made, tcnear won't open and has a fatal error (I couldn't copy/paste the details of the error report for some reason..) every time. Oddly, the K8 does operate with Winamp in this state, you just can't access the tcnear control app. Now, before I sent the old K8 back, I had tried extensively to get the thing to work (it had been working, and there were no changes in my system.. so it was frustrating..) One of the things I had done was to get a beta version of this tcnear 2.0 version that is the current one. The beta version was "r1967" unlike the current one, however, so they are different. When this current 2.0 tcnear crashed I uninstalled and went back to this beta 2.0 (r1967) and it seems to work.

So, very weird, I don't know what changed between revisions but something that rendered 2.0 unusable on my PC. Anyway, on with my testing of the newly returned K8.

I wish the box worked like a hammer or pair of shoes - simple, effective.. oh well, more troubleshooting - my favorite!

I'll let you guys know how it goes..

(PC with XP, P4 3.2, TI 1394, etc, etc.)

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

I just got tha same problem, but with konnekt 24D, the right speaker leaks about 2 db (or something) even when the master volume is at 0.
And the worse thing is that this is the second time it happens for me!!! sad
The first time I went to the service store and got a new one direct, this time I dont know what they will say!
Is is really a hardware failure do you think? Or could it be the drivers?

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

doggelito - That is definitely the question this situation drives you to.. Hardware or the sketchy drivers/firmware that has been problematic the whole time now.. hmmm.. One would lean toward the drivers/firmware obviously, but I did thorough testing (short of opening the box up physically..)

A couple of tests I felt proved beyond any doubt in my case were the 'straight wire' test and putting the box on another machine altogether (my laptop..) The straight wire test was just to connect a little flash player, like a creative zen nano, into the K8 thru the Aux Ins with a basic 1/8" stereo to double 1/4" cable W/O ANY FW1394 CONNECTION AT ALL, totally standalone hardware. My left output still had no signal..

Connecting the K8 to my laptop with Sonar6, Winamp, Powerdvd, etc. had the same results as my desktop.

When I tried different drivers the problem persisted. I tried pretty much anything and everything you could think of. At first, a workaround was effective where I could crank the left channel with some hot signal and it would crackle and start to pass signal again. It even seemed related to sample rate change at one point where some apps would change the samp. rate and the left channel would go off. That made me think firmware too, and I had read about some problems with this with others. BUT... luckily (I guess) the left channel finally sh*t out completely and wouldn't output anymore at all.

The bottom line for me was the K8 was still under warranty, but I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about this box's "tank-like" appearance anymore - which is not good for something you'd like to use with a laptop on location.

I think we are going to start hearing and reading on this forum and others about konnekt units that are being sent back for these types of hardware repairs. I am starting to see it.. if I get some more time I will look around and see if I can find some of the posts I've read and link them here..

If you can prove w/o any doubt that it is a hardware failure, maybe you can persuade TC service into replacing the unit w/o charge (assuming it is outside of warranty time.) I would start preparing your info to present to them, in my case, I was convinced a firmware update wasn't going to 'heal' the box somehow.

Anyway, gotta go. My K8 seems to working for now, better try to maximize it's "up" time.

Good luck!

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

Fellow "Konnekt"'ers - there's a bunch of other people on this forum who experienced the same problem as you did (myself included; changed the unit ones and the same problem appeared again on the second unit - didn't change the second unit though as the warranty is now expired).

Basically at this point we may all conclude that it's an obvious hardware problem that TC overlooked at some point of production. The problem is related to all pre-Studio Konnekt family (at least I haven't read on this forum any complains from Studio Konnekt owners about the problem with their main output pot/stereo balance problem).

Here are some link FYI:

http://forum.tcelectronic.com/viewtopic.php?id=236

I wonder if this problem and its description should be put as "sticky" in this forum?........ It will surely mean that TC acknowledges this issue as mass hardware problem though - and that might have unpredictable consequences..

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

pg

I would love to see this thread be turned into a sticky..

Wake up and deal with it TC - it's better to address it head-on. It's becoming ever more obvious that the company will have to eat some out-of-warranty costs if they want to avoid a public relations disaster. I think it would be a mistake to gamble on alienating a market that is very much finite; this isn't bread or gasoline you sell. In relation to basic commodities that all humans use, your products are used by a fairly small amount of the global population, who communicate amongst themselves evermore. Home recording enthusiasts are some of the primary users of forum systems across the web, and, if a problem is prevalent enough, mass opinion can sway drastically over the course of a week. There is only one solution to the potential negative repercussions from this unfortunate event, and that is to do what many folks on this forum have already suggested. Set up an exchange program FREE OF CHARGE (including out-of-warranty units..) for the users having this hardware problem. Of course, TC would have to identify and replace either the faulty part (pot..) or faulty production process that is creating this problem first, otherwise why waste the effort (maybe that is what is happening right now..)

I truly hope TC steps up to the plate, I'm only in for $300. of a Konnekt8, but you can imagine the likelihood of any future TC purchases for me... My replacement unit still works right now, but, like everyone else, it will soon break and be out of warranty.

I know I'm dissatisfied and want a 'goto' plan for when this Konnekt dies like the previous one did (see my other posts..)

ANYONE ELSE FEEL THEY WOULD LIKE A REPLACEMENT PLAN FOR THIS NASTY HARDWARE ISSUE?

Lonald.

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

whatever happened to this... having exactly the same problems... my K8 is 11 months old, I love it sound quality wise, but in the last two weeks the left channel is more of less dead... I can tap the output level knob and the the knob "bypasses" and sound comes out at full volume...

I get intermittent crack and pops...

I use this semi-professionally (I demo songs for a band attached to a label) and can't really be without a sound card for 6 weeks....

Am I just... out of luck?

I'm one of those people that praises good things and widely trashes bad things... I've been praising the sound quality on this things for months... don't wanna have to start trashing it...

I only say that because I see that this thread never was dealt with and apparently customers were just hung out to dry...

[creeping sense of dread]

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

HI there:)

i have the same wierd situation in the 1st on my konnekt 8.

i reconnected & reinstalled everything - i updated the firmware although when i open tc near control panel it still written that my firmware isnt updated.. anyhow it allways have been like that & worked great.

once i had this problem & somehow it got repaired & it was fine.

now when i mute the tc from the hardware panel - the right monitor "jumps" in the volume - shouts & really hurts my ears, while the left one is silent. if i make the volume higher so i do hear from the left monutor but lower, & it shouts in the right one - it hurts! the problem last time was only in monutors, & i heared fine with earphones. in this time i hae the problem also in earphones sad

what shoul i do?
pls help
have to work & do music!!!

is it a hardware or software problem?

10X alot!!

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

Hello

First, sorry i'm french and my english is bad..

I have exactly this problem !! the left channel makes intermittent cracks, distortions..
the sound between the channel right and left is unbalanced (the sound in the channel right is more loud)

can the problem depend to the processor of K8?

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

hello, i too am having the same problems with my konnect 8, it had been working fine for about a year and now it's doing exactly the same as all of yours. I hope they address this soon because i really can't afford to buy another interface.

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

Same problem.  Dead left channel.  sad

Re: Konnekt 8 weird balance issue and static noise

just appeared today on my konnekt 24d. when i lower the output knob to 0 right channel is still audible, and after a few minutes it bursts with static.

and ill take this opportunity to say that tc electronics has the poorest customer support i have ever seen, i have read all threads about this from 2007 and only 1 reply from a tc rep? you'd think you would get solid support for a 300$ unit from a firm as TC elec., but nada. id prolly get a better one from a chinese guy selling 1$ calculators on ebay.

would it kill them to make a nice sticky about this and tell us what to do? or at least tell us where to buy the new pots? and this is really lowering our standards and doing tc el. a big favour by sorting this production defect ourselves. should already be a big sticky where you'd just send your address and serial number of the unit and a new pot should be on its way free of charge.

what...do we ...do...to...fix ...this???
