Topic: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

First off, any time you work with mains voltages or can come into contact with them, well, be carefull, really, this stuff can kill. But it isn't hard, if you are really nervous, then make sure the unit is unplugged, and touch a radiator or anything grounded to discharge any static electricity you have built up (walking on carpets etc) so as not to damage the IC chips with static discharge wink

Right, all credit goes to my friend ryan, who had the same problem as me, but decided to see if there was anything obvious wrong, and found this out.

First off, my problem started with the the G-Major freezing during a gig. i thought it was broken, but then it started working again, and then one day it just would not start. The screen lit up, but nothing happened, like a completely dead unit.

Well, Ryan had the same problem, so he took his apart and discovered that there's two chips in sockets that can be replaced. Now either of these can come loose, so if your g-Major is hanging, then take it apart, and find these two chips:

On the main board, easy to get to:

On the front panel, less easy, and you'll need to have something to undo the security hex bolts. Anyway, remove the two inner dials, then pull the panel forwards and slide off to the left or the right, and find the following chip (which was slightly loose on mine)
http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/hosted/26476f7d1682783.jpg

Simply see if these are properly in (give them a slight push, then try the unit on again, just don't touch the innards as they'll be exposed)

Anyway, if this is the problem, then this should sort it out!

I am well pleased, as I bought a replacement g-major, but now I have two, one for each amp setup!

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

By hanging, you're talking about not fully powering up or freezing, right?

That is, this is different than the other guy's post about the knobs not scrolling through the menus correctly?  I'm having that problem and wasn't planning on having to do any surgery this extensive smile

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

It's the hanging yes, not powering up fully and freezing, where the freezing eventually leads to the not powering up as in my case smile

THe not scrolling correctly could be related, as the chip on the front panel looks to me like the chip that tkaes the knobs/wheels/etc and tells the mainboard what to do, so it may be worth checking in that case as well!

The surgery isn't too bad for this, it's just undoing the case, pushing two chips in, and then reassembling big_smile

Excellent.  Thanks for the tip.

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

So happy I found this!! (Still waitin for TCE support to get back to me)

I've been having this exact issue.

I bought the unit on Ebay, shipped across the states, then brought over to South Africa by plane. Pretty sure things got jangled loose in all that moving right?

I found that the age old remedy of giving the unit a few bangs helped get it working, which made me think something was loose. This thread confirmed it and now I'm opening it up to sort it out!!

Thanks so much for posting this.

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

No problem man smile Glad to be of help!

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

i think you seriously just saved me spending $900 on a rocktron prophesy. or a g-system. when all i really need or want is my g-major. i'm going to try this fix in a few hours.  i haven't been able to use my g-major in a very long and depressing year because of it hanging. nothing happens when i power up the unit....this sounds exactly like my problem...it started with freezing and then just wouldnt power on....if this works. this is going to save my ass big time! thank you in advance.

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

Did it work for you?

Im still having the problem.

Its something to do with the input knob.
It powers up fine, but with blank lit screen. Then I need to wiggle the input knob side to side, then it loads.
WTF is going on? Is something shorting out?

(by the way my chip on the front next to the input knob is soldered on. no socket)

Same bad behavior with my g-major. The flat multicore cable (at the top of red frame) had bad connection with connector. Isolation of some wires didn't fully penetrated and crimped. Just press down connector properly. All freezes resolved. After this "upgrade" no problem with g-major last two years. Good luck! http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/hosted/26476f7d1682783.jpg

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

hello there..i'm hoping that someone on here can help me out before i'm forced to get rid of my g major which i dont wanna do!!
I arrived at a festival this saturday, set up my unit as usual (all the plugs in the right places) but for some reason i had no sound at all.
I run my unit through a jsx in the effects loop and have never had a problem up until this point so i checked all my leads (all ok), the effects loop of the jsx (worked fine) and found that although the input levels were showing an input on the g major i had no output..
I removed the return lead from the back of the JSX and i had sound from the amp but obviously no effects so it appears to be a problem with g major.....having played the set with one sound and survived i set up my gear the following day in exactly the same way and lo and behold everything worked fine...
I've read about so called reliability problems with the G major but have never had any problems in this respect however i have no confidence in the unit now and am hoping someone out there may have experienced a similar problem and may have a remedy??
My unit is version is 1.11 so perhaps an update will cure the problem...Thanks in eager anticipation!! smile

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

This sounds so unfortunate!
Other than a cable being put in the wrong place (in a hurry) or the input and output knobs not set right, I dont have a clue?

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

hey read774...sorry, i've had reliabilty issues as well, but nothing like that.

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

Yes, that's how mine started, it'd freeze, i'd turn it on and off and then it'd work, then one day it just wouldn't work.

The above procedure fixed it smile It's simple to do, and shouldn't take too long to try!

I also use a behringer fcb1010 as well.

Tell me if it works, a few people have got theirs working again this way smile

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

hi, i'm new here.
here is my problem, when i power up my gmajor the display is on but show nothing (blank). I did checked the chip (and pushed it to make sure they are sit in the socket prefectly) and also checked the cable, but it still freeze.

I did the upgrade software procedure and my gmajor receive all the upgrade perfectly. but still the display show blank when i turn it on again. so I think it's not the chip nor the cable.
Is  it possible that the crystal component is broken? I heard that if the crystal is broken the program can't be loaded.

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

can someone give me a guide on how open the G-Major for doing this ... I don't know how to open the main board ... Thanks !

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

You need to unscrew all the jack plugs at the back, and all the screws, and all the torque screws, it's not too hard smile

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

Hi all,
I'm new to the group and had this very same problem with a used G-Major unit that I bought off eBay a couple of months ago. I figured that I was screwed to say the least until I cam across this post from 7 Dying Trees. Man you were right on the money with this one. I removed all of the knobs, jacks and covers as instructed. I inspected the insertion of the chips and flat ribbon cables and saw no immediate problems. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the front chip, in photo 2, did not appear to be fully inserted. I had to really look closely to see it. When compared to the main board chip it was not sitting level at all four corners as it should have been. I carefully tried to seat it further into the socket but it wouldn't budge. I knew that it needed to go in further so I changed the way that I was pressing it. I grabbed it with my thumb and put my first finger behind the board and squeezed really until I heard a positive snap sound. It was so hard to fully seat that I though that I broke the chip and/or socket but I didn't. I used the same procedure on the remaining three corners. One more out of the remaining three also made a loud snapping sound and again scared me. Once again it was alright. At this point I could now see that the chip was fully inserted and basically sitting level or slightly below the chip socket when viewed from the side. All I can say is that this is a very tight fitting chip and socket so be careful, but don't be afraid to give it a pretty good squeeze to seat it if the chip is not fully or properly inserted. Thanks 7 Dying Trees for taking the time to post the original thread! This saved me $130.00 plus shipping back to TC Electronics. Please remember as stated above, do this at your own risk. Please don't attempt this if you are not comfortable with the possibility of breaking your unit. Please send it into TC if this is the case.

My Thoughts on this problem:

And of course, the unit now boots up fully again. I'm guessing that because this chip was never fully inserted during assembly that the connection became poor with tarnishing over time. Once the connection became too poor, the chip would not power up to complete the boot up process. I'm sure there's some amount of very small voltage to power this chip. (Maybe 5 volts or less).

For me, this problem just came out of the blue one night at band rehearsal. I was changing presets with the dial and the preset numbers just disappeared. I lost output sound and the small amber LEDs in the top right of the buttons were blinking really faintly. I thought that it was a power supply board issue for sure. I power cycled the unit and that's when I got the blank screen. I also tried the reset procedure with holding the TAP button while powering as well. Nothing!

I've spent a lot time with this response with the hopes that it will help another user get back up and running as fast as I did. Good Luck everyone!  lol

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

I joined the forum just to say thanks to you guys for sharing this information. I thought I had the chip seated well, but it still took about 5-6 minutes to boot after turning on the G-Major...although it would boot consistently after that time period.

After reading the last post, I took it apart again and put more pressure on the chip and sure enough, it clicked into position. Now it boots as it should and I can't imagine it will come loose again!

Many, many thanks to all of you!

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

Every time I look at this thread, it's nice to know that the original post helped so many people out!

For anyone that wants to try this, you actually need a torque key set (looks like an allen key, but with rounded edges inwards if that makes sense).

It's a bit of a pain to do, and takes a while, but is well worth it smile

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

I'm actually having this problem again.
My screen doesnt go blank, it just freezes and I have no sound.
To fix it what I do is bang the LCD screen and wiggle the input knob from side to side hard enough to bend the PC board behind it I think.
This sorts it out for a bit, but it sometimes only lasts 5mins. I think the vibration from my playing shakes stuff loose, even tho my rack is not on the cab (it sits on an adjacent shelf)

Re: Your G-Major hanging? Here's how to fix it...

This could be the single greatest post I've ever read on a message board.

Thanks, 7 Dying Trees.  So far so good for me!!
