Is the ebtech he 2 necessary to connect trs back and forth to ts from the Mesas loop, or will TRS cables work by themselves in this position?

What do you mean by "work"?
If you mean - "will the audio signal pass" then yes, they will work.
If you mean "Will they give you the benefits of a balanced connection by cancelling common-mode noise", then the answer is "in a reduced manner on one connection and not at all on the other".
If you also mean "Will they eliminate the possibility of a ground loop and the noise that is often associated with that problem?", then the answer is no.
