Topic: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I wasn't too impressed actually. Some nice ones, quite a few I know I will never use, mostly stuff I could have made myself, and that is with me not even knowing the NS particularly well, since I've just got mine.

Ah well, they are for free, so I won't complain smile

One thing I don't understand tho, why isn't there a huge library of user presets in SysEx format downloadable from the net? On the yahoo group there's almost nothing apart from the LTD presets.

Back in the days I used a now ancient Roland GP100, and there was a page with hundreds of syx files, that user uploaded.

The NS has been around for long enough, so I would have thought the community must have been able to build up a substantial collection of user presets. Or am I just looking in the wrong direction?

OK, the question about patches seems to come up frequently, so do ignore this post, if you want smile
But it's still a question I'm wondering about. There are millions of patches for about everything out there, users of all kinds of gear get together on dedicated sites, and happily upload their own sounds. So the absence of a similar scene for the Nova System seems a bit strange.
The patches sticky is nothing compared to other sites I've seen, with tons of syx files and stuff.

Are NS-users different? smile

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

Please have a look in http://forum.tcelectronic.com/topic/400 … m-patches/

There are not hundred of presets available, but some nice ones.
For my BOSS GT-10, I have found plenty of patches on the net, but most of them were just disastrous...

I am looking for a nice chorus (the settings of the factory presets of the NS sound too metallic to me).
Are there good ones in the LDT edition ?
If yes, could you give the parameters (I have no MIDI interface...) ?
I am new NS user (I received mine last week), but I promise I will post any preset I am proud of !

There are a few spacey chorusy patches among them, but none that particularly struck me. Thing is, even though I don't know the NS to well yet, it doesn't seem to be too difficult to create those patches.
As for Chorus, I found the detune function to be quite useful. It sounds different to the chorus, but the effect can be similar.

It'd still be nice and interesting to share patches, to see what others have done. Maybe someone managed to make one killer Jazz tone on his NS, because that's what I'm currently working on.

You don't have a Midi interface? There's really no reason not to have on, because the simple ones are dead cheap. You'll get them for under €20.- and they do what they are supposed to.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I will buy a MIDI interface soon, but I want to test my NS during the "30 days money-back" period :-)
But thanks of your advice, I will check the detune effect.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

i think the limited presets has some great presets; warm lead, jcm 800, dirty dry DI, basic pedalboard, without you, van halen phaser OD and 80s.  I printed out settings for each of these and have found a setting a like for each effect.

chorus: .944, disabled,  depth = 7, 4.47 hi cut, 12.1 ms, mix = 8. i've found the mix and depth levels to be key in not having too much effect.

Pitch in detune: 8, -8, 10, 12, mix =25 provides a good chorus effect - freeing up the mod for another effect such as phaser or tremelo.

if you're trying to check this thing out in 30 days, use the limited presets and make your own patches based on what the professionals came up with. i fiddel'ed with this thing too long, only to come up with a patch that sounds great at low volume by myself. then i'd go to band practice and get to playing levels and it didnt sound so good. i try and tweak or take notes in practice for future tweaking  bc things change quite a bit as playing levels increase. my drummer is just too dang loud and kills his cymbals - he's good though so you take the good with the bad

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I have just tested your 2 settings, they sound quite good (at least at low level).
I will test them during our next session with the band, to ear how they sound at higher level.
I will also try to get a MIDI interface quickly to be able to upload the presets of the LTD edition into my NS.
Thanks a lot for your advices.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I only really liked Pete's presets to be honest. So much so that I've used some of his settings on my preset. For everything else I think I've spent enough time finding my sound that I don't change them around anymore...

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

croguy - not sure if lifele55 is in a band or not. to me, there's a big difference between playing in a room by yourself and playing in a band and live setting but the Pete Thorn settings have been out there way before the limited presets.  i used it exclusively until the limited presets were released. but now that they are, do yourself a favor and check them out. Theres several that work well in a live setting. and with pros working with TC for making the presets, i'm not sure why anyone would fiddle away trying to find the right settings. but to each his own. good luck.

Sure I will.
Let me just the time to upload the LDT presets into my NS (I get the cable tomorrow) and I will test them with my band. Our bass player seems to be one relative of your drummer, so the volume will be high enough !
I also believe TC experts to be more effective than me after 2 days experience with my own NS...

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

This is really nice forum.
I will buy a MIDI interface immediately, but I want to test my NS during the 30 days money-back period.
Thanks

I am in a band and I do agree that playing at home differs alot when playing live or even just during a jam session.. I do agree to check out the LTD presets if you're in a rush to try out the Nova

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I have not succeeded yet to upload the LTD presets into my NS using Midiox, I have seen lots of users reporting exactly the same issue. I have carrefully followed the instructions from the FAQs sections on how to export sysex into NS using Midiox, but it seems that the NS is not able to handle the signal properly... I have even tried to reset the NS, but it still does not work...
--> I have submitted the issue to TC support, let's see what they answer.

But anyway I tried the NS with my own rapidly created presets with my band yesterday evening, we have played really loud, and now I am sure : the NS is really a great unit, the sound is incredible !
All the band members were enthousiastic, telling I definitely have to throw away my GT-10 !!! smile

Anyway, I hope to succeed in testing the LTD presets sooner or later, to have good ideas to improve my own presets...

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I finally get the LTD presets successfully uploaded into my standard NS system using Midiox smile

The only thing I had to do was to re-install the driver of my M-Audio UNO MIDI USB interface (available on the M-Audio web site).

Then, simply follow the instructions of the FAQs to upload the sysex file into the NS system
(see http://tcsupport.custhelp.com/app/answe … %20system)
Only point to mention is that during this upload, the current activated preset is not overwritten, so if you want to upload all LTD presets you have for example to activate preset 19-1 which is empty in the LTD sysex file.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I guess I'm gonna have to try those LTD presets. I typically don't like using other peoples' patches because there are so many variables to tone (guitar, woods used, pickups, wiring, amps, speakers, rooms) that I just like to write what sounds good to my ears.

If these LTD presets are that good - LIVE - It may save me some time

I too have found that many of the patches I write in the studio don't work for a LIVE setting. I typically take the time to copy the 3 presets on a bank into an empty bank and start messing with settings between songs at practice. That way, i have a bank of "bedroom" settings and a bank of "live" settings. Non destructive editing

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

Presets are just a starting point IMHO, so once you found one that appeals to you, you'd start tweaking it, until it works for you, your guitar, your playing style etc.
I do the same with synths, flip through some of them, until I find something close to what I'm having in mind, and start tweaking away smile

So yes, there are some nice presets among those LTD, but none of them I will use without modifying.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

I have just tested the LTD presets, and I must say I have been very disapointed by most of them.
I have only kept 9 from the 44 as good starting point for my own presets, but I will not use a single one without change.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

Well, I backed up all my presets (a whopping 9 total) and loaded the LTD presets.

I found ONE that I liked, and only because it utilizes the Distortion as gain which I have not been using much. The OD works great for me and I simply haven't found that magic gain tone for the Dist...until now. So, I got that going for me.

The U2 tones were far too dirty for their intended purposes IMHO, but I'm using a humbucker and those patches may have been designed with a single coil in mind. That goes back to my whole point about presets being kinda useless when you consider all the other variables to tone. The delays in those U2 patches were nice, but not all that different from the ones I'd already programmed.

All in all, a fun little experiment and a bit of practice backing up data.

Re: New LTD presets - so, do you like them?

wow. while i didn't find alot, i found 5 or 6 that were keepers.  i found alot of useable pedal settings by going thru these. I printed them out and for example, the delay setting on 'warm delay' is a keeper, the distortion on 'dirty dry' sounds like a mesa boogie recto, compressor setting on 'pedalboard' is a good one for clean to od sounds (-6db instead of -5db), etc.
